Coming from a family of stonecutters 💎 from the Land of Wa, Kozuki Oden was the Daimyō of the Kuri region. Family-wise, he is the son of Kozuki Sukiyaki , the former Shogun of Wano Country who disowned him at the age of 18. Married to Amatsuki Toki, he is the father of two children, namely Kozuki Momonosuke and his little sister Kozuki Hiyori.
Kozuki Oden was the leader of the Nine Red Scabbards, a group of Samurai 🤺 serving the Kozuki family. He was also the commander of Edward Newgate aka Whitebeard 's Second Fleet and was part of the crew of the Pirate Lord, Gol D. Roger.
Oden's Appearance
Oden had long black hair and wore an imperial style beard. He always had a thick mustache except when he was a member of the Roger Pirates. A large hat with an original style sat on the top of his head as well as a kimono. 🥋 Rather tall, he seemed to exceed in size the vast majority of the pirates in Gol D. Roger's crew.
Personality of Oden
Being very bold, but also contemptuous and selfish, Oden carried out many horrible and violent acts when he was still a teenager. In particular, he burned down the yakuza establishment in revenge for the fact that he had been banned. Being also a pervert, he kidnapped women to create a harem 👩🏿🤝👩🏼 in the mountains. Very little worried about the consequences of his actions, he took part in a large number of brutal fights, such as against the yakuza or against the relatives of the women he kidnapped. Note that these women, being charmed by his attitude, ultimately decided to stay with him.
Following his incarceration in the quarries for forced labor, Oden finally changed his mentality. Becoming less egocentric, he sought to make the lives of others better. On the other hand, he went about it in the wrong way, which made his actions still shocking. This was particularly the case the day he wanted to divert a river 🏞️ towards the city to save the inhabitants from a drought. Unfortunately, the city was flooded. Subsequently, we notice that Oden has improved since he managed to bring peace to Kuri after he was exiled by his father, Kozuki Sukiyaki .
Another trait of his personality was his fearlessness and his immense need to sail the sea to the point of leaving illegally. When he was still young, this desire was more important to him than preparing to take his father's place as Shogun. That's why he was part of Gol D. Roger 's crew. On his return, he made the decision to succeed his father in order to open the borders of the Land of Gold 🏅 and change the world. Furthermore, he preferred to choose his own vassals as loyal samurai instead of others.
Daimyo Abilities
Having been a member of the Whitebeard Pirates as Commander of the Second Division and the Roger Pirates, Kozuki Oden was a formidable fighter. Thanks to his impressive physical strength, he was able to resist an assault from Whitebeard with his Bisento. He was also able to slash the Mountain God with great ease while others were unable to face this enormous creature. Furthermore, during his first meeting with Gol D. Roger, the latter prevented his two most powerful pirates from confronting Oden. Although the real reason was that the Pirate Lord was excited to fight Oden, it also implies that Oden was very powerful in his eyes.
Oden's other abilities are his endurance and unwavering tenacity. During an entire night and day, he was notably able to confront Kuri's most dangerous criminal, Ashura Doji accompanied by his men and defeat them all. Another example of his endurance is that he was able to be pulled by a boat for several days by just hanging on a chain. Another of his exploits is to have been able to resist more than an entire hour immersed in a pot of boiling water while at the same time carrying on his shoulders a large wooden board on which all his vassals stood.
Like Monkey D. Luffy , Gol D. Roger or his son Kozuki Momonosuke, Oden has the power to hear the voice 🗣️ of all things, this ability which allows the one who possesses it to understand creatures or even inanimate objects even if They don't speak the same language as him. Additionally, thanks to this ability, Oden is able to read Poneglyphs. These are these mysterious blocks of stone scattered throughout the Grand Line islands and where we find inscribed in esoteric language the location of the Ancient Weapons as well as the location of the Laugh Tale where the legendary One Piece treasure is hidden.
Haki
Kozuki Oden has great mastery of Busoshoku no Haki or Armament Haki , which is known as Ryuo in Wano Country. We notably saw him during his confrontation with Whitebeard when he impregnated his sabers ⚔️ with Combative Fluid. It is important to note that Oden is the only one to date who has been able to control one of the 83 legendary Meito: Enma, while the latter can drain the Fluid from its user until it is exhausted . As revealed by criminal Ashura Doji, Oden also possesses Haoshoku no Haki or Haki of Kings . He notably used it in chapter 963 of volume 96 of the One Piece manga during his conflict with Whitebeard.
The Blade of Oden
A fan of fighting with two swords, Oden has developed his own style called Oden's Nitôryû which is based on the use of two blades at the same time. The Meito Enma known as the "Sword that Can Cut Hell" was his first sword. This is the only blade known to date to have been able to injure Kaido of the Hundred Beasts. 🐲 Oden used another Meito as his second sword, the Ame no Habakiri or "the Sword that can cut the sky". Forged by Tenguyama Hitetsu, the latter is part of the O Wazamono, otherwise called the 21 Great Blades.
Kozuki Oden's allies
Kozuki family
To date, we only know five members of this family: Kozuki Sukiyaki, Oden's father and former Shogun of Wano Country, Kozuki Oden himself, his wife Toki and his two children Momonosuke and Hiyori. Oden cared greatly about his clan, as when he sacrificed himself to allow his son Momonosuke, threatened by Kaido's pirates ☠️, to escape.
The Minks
Among the allies of Kozuki Oden and his family are the powerful Minks, this tribe of humanoids with animal characteristics. Indeed, Oden and his people have a very friendly, even practically fraternal, relationship with these Minks. Two of their members are even in the service of the Daimyō of Kuri, namely Inuarashi the King of Dawn (a dog 🐶 Mink) and Nekomamushi the King of Twilight (a Mink cat) , although they themselves were both dukes of the Principality of Mokomo on the island of Zô.
These two Minks followed Oden everywhere and were considered members of the Whitebeard Pirates as well as Gol D. Roger's. Thanks to their unwavering loyalty to the Kozuki family, all Minks greatly respected the Kozuki to the point of even giving their lives for one of their other vassals. Indeed, Inuarashi was ready to sacrifice his entire Kingdom as well as his people in order to protect the ninja Raizo of the Mist, servant of the Kozuki and member of the Nine Red Scabbards. For his part, Nekomamushi sacrificed himself and lost an arm during this same event. Having been rivals for a long time, these two Minks even agreed to make peace in order to satisfy Oden's son, Momonosuke.
Roger's Pirates
Kozuki Oden was once part of the Roger Pirates. He was notably present when they landed at Laugh Tale and it was in their company that Oden learned the real story. It was the members of this crew who nicknamed this island Laugh 😹 Tale, which means the story of those who laugh, because everyone laughed after they found the island and the pretty loot that Joy Boy left there 800 years ago. There seems to be a very good understanding between Oden and the other pirates in Roger's crew. According to the latter, they were downright lucky to have Oden among them. It turns out that Red Shanks and Buggy the Clown even offered to help him make his dream come true.
Whitebeard's Crew
Before joining the Gol D. Roger Pirates, Oden was previously in Whitebeard's crew. He had even become Commander of its second fleet. If we are to believe the words of Sengoku the Buddha, the former Admiral Commander-in-Chief of the Navy , and the Mink Inuarashi, Whitebeard had a lot of affection for Oden. And yet, their story did not begin under the best auspices. Indeed, during their first meeting, there was a clash between the two men 🤼 when Oden had expressed the desire to join the crew. Enraged at Oden for his surprise attack on their captain, the crew members were not at all inclined to welcome him among them. For his part, Whitebeard had also declined his proposal, especially since he found that Oden had a savage nature and that he was not really the type of individual to serve anyone other than himself. From his experience, he knew that this could lead to terrible consequences such as mutiny. And on the other hand, Edward Newgate did not want to be the cause of an incident in Wano.
However, over time, Whitebeard and his pirates noticed that Oden was truly determined and that nothing could stop him in his desire to join them. Recall that he had clung to their ship just by holding on to a chain ⛓️ for days. In addition, the latter showed them immense kindness, which impressed them. So they finally accepted that he join them and congratulated him by throwing him into the air. Subsequently, Whitebeard's confidence in Oden grew so much that he made him one of the commanders of his fleet. On the other hand, the understanding between Oden and the other members of the crew had improved to the point that they were always ready to help him whenever Oden found himself in dangerous situations because of his impetuous and reckless character.
The 9 children of Oden, the Red Scabbards
The group called the Nine Red Scabbards was unofficially formed 41 years ago. This was following the denial of Oden by his father Shogun Kozuki Sukiyaki. These are 9 orphan children taken in by Oden and made into very powerful Samurai. Kinemon aka The Fire Fox and Denjiro (became Kyoshiro the Sleepy 💤 after Oden's death) were the first two to join Oden and follow him out of the Capital of Flowers after the events with the god of the mountains. Kin'emon would later become the leader of the Nine Red Scabbards and had stated that he was even willing to give his life for Oden. When the Taikomochi Shimotsuki Yasuie asked Kinemon why he and the others obeyed Oden, he replied that Oden was the only person in the world to whom they all owed their lives. Kinemon and Denjiro had even gone so far as to argue over which one was the favorite of the Daimyō of Kuri.
Next are the others who were recruited after Oden saved them throughout his journey across the country. First of all, Oden met Izou and Kikunojo, two orphan brothers, in the Ringo region in the Land of the Wano. Then, it was in the Kibi region that he met Kurozumi Kanjuro who wanted to steal his horses 🐎 but the latter was defeated and joined Oden. Afterwards, it was the turn of an excellent ninja and ex O-Niwaban, Raizo of the Mist to follow him. After the confrontation and Oden's victory over Ashura Doji, the latter also joined him. It was after that, 39 years ago, that Oden transformed Kuri into a territory where it was pleasant to live. His father then put an end to his denial and named him Daimyō of Kuri. With this appointment, Oden made the decision to make his six recruits samurai and officially constitute the Red Scabbard group.
Six years later, 3 other young people joined their ranks. These are the Minks Nekomamushi and Inuarashi as well as Kawamatsu, the fish-man Fugu . 🐠 You should know that these three young people found themselves stranded on Kuri beach. Villagers mistreated them for not being human, but Oden saved them, which is why they entered his service and joined the Red Scabbards. We can also talk about Izô who was also recruited 39 years ago and who remained in Oden's service for at least 9 years. However, as the group is now known as the Nine Red Scabbards, we can deduce that Izô was never a part of it.
Oden's greatest enemy, Kaido
Kozuki Oden and Hundred Beast Kaido were enemies. Indeed, Yonkô had allied itself with Kurozumi Orochi to provide him with military support when the latter had seized the status of Shogun in Wano during Oden's absence. This happened 28 years ago with the help of Kurozumi Higurashi aka The Old Woman . 👵🏼 Upon his return 25 years ago, Oden discovered the changes in the country and learned that the Emperor had wanted to kill his children Momonosuke and Hiyori. Seeing that his wife Toki was wounded in the thigh by an arrow while protecting his children, Oden flew into a rage and rushed to the castle to punish those responsible. Unfortunately, he came up against the very strong barriers of Bari Bari no Mi, the Paramecia-type Devil Fruit , from Orochi.
It was at this point that Oden was forced to make a deal with Orochi and Kaido in order to protect the people of Wano. Indeed, Oden had to dance 🕺🏼 almost naked in the streets of the Flower Capital every week for 5 years if he didn't want to see 100 people die every day. At the same time, even if he lost all credibility in front of his people, he also wanted to avoid a war against the Hundred Beast Crew which would have caused several thousand deaths among the inhabitants. In return, Kaido promised to provide him with a ship that would allow him to leave Wano with his family and his vassals. However, once the 5 years passed, Emperor Kaido did not keep his promise. And when he killed 16 of Flower Hyogoro's subordinates and his wife because of his rebellion, Oden became angry and confronted him.
During their confrontation, Kaido was marked for life with a scar inflicted by Oden. Unfortunately, the latter lost the fight due to a trick by Kurozumi Higurashi. The latter had pretended to be her son Momonosuke taken hostage thanks to her Devil Fruit Mane Mane no Mi (Transvestite-Fruit) . Having been distracted, Oden was unable to avoid Kaido's K anabo ⛏️ blow. Angry at the Old Woman for interfering in their confrontation, Kaido killed her. Even though he had won the fight, the Yonkô had respect for Oden and decided that he would execute him himself so that he would be remembered for a long time. And the choice was death by scalding in a huge pot.
History
Kozuki Oden's story begins when he was born, 👩🏼🍼 in the Flower Capital, 59 years before the main narrative of One Piece. He started his escapades at a very young age and they were numerous. Here is a small list:
- When he was still less than a year old, he managed to throw his nanny with a single punch.
- At the age of two, he managed to get his hands on two fleeing rabbits.
- At 4 years old, he killed a bear 🧸 using a rock
- At 6 years old when he entered the pleasure district to indulge in games of chance while stoning away the family fortune.
- He was only 8 years old when he started drinking and taking baths 🛀🏼 with the Yakuza in their establishments even though it was forbidden to enter without being Yakuza. He was then banned from entering these establishments the following year.
- At the age of 10, wanting revenge against the Yakuza, he set fire to one of their establishments and confronted them in a fight. He was then arrested for assault and battery.
- It was following his confinement in a stone-cutting quarry that Oden changed his attitude. He now wanted to help others once he had served his sentence, but these actions unfortunately proved clumsy. When he was 14 years old while a terrible drought was raging in the country, he made the decision to divert the course of a river so that it could reach the capital and save the people. Unfortunately, his action had terrible consequences since it caused enormous floods. Then charged for this incident, he tried for the first time to flee by sea 🌊 but his attempt failed.
- At 15, he decided to hide in the mountains. Unfortunately, his old habits took over again. He began kidnapping women in the capital at night to bring them to his temple in the mountains where he created a veritable harem. When those close to these women (husbands, lovers or family) tried to get them back by defying him, the consequence was a war, the Harem War to be precise. The latter only ended thanks to the intervention of the most influential and powerful Yakuza in Wano Country at the time: Hyogoro of the Flower .
You should know that at the age of 18, Oden had already tried 38 times to go to sea, but he had never succeeded until then. He even almost lost his life several times. Since then, his reputation has been well established in the capital and all the inhabitants have not stopped making fun of him, even insulting him. Furthermore, young Oden did not stop acting up. Exasperated by his son, Kozuki Sukiyaki made the decision to disown him. And after he denounced himself for stealing the Mountain God's baby 🐗 (in place of Kinemon and Denjiro) and defeated him with his two-sword technique, he was expelled from the Flowery Capital by his father. His adventures in Wano began at this time and it was during this period that he met the future members of the Nine Red Scabbards and became Daimyo of Kuri.
When he returned to the Flower Capital 30 years ago, everyone was impressed to see him and his 10 samurai dressed like a Shogun's servants and showing good manners. It was during that same year that Oden encountered the Whitebeard Pirates who were at Itachi's port in Kuri. He attacked his Captain directly head-on before asking him with a smile on his face ☺️ to accept him as a recruit. Not wanting him on board, the crew tried to leave by leaving him behind, but Oden chased after them and hung on to a chain attached to the boat. However, he was not alone. There was also Izô who had clung to Oden. Whitebeard then decided to bring Izô back to the ship and test Oden's determination by offering him a challenge: if he managed to hold on to this chain for three days, he would accept him among them. Oden held on until the last ten minutes, but when he heard a woman in difficulty, he dropped everything to go and rescue her. Believing that he was a sea monster, those who wanted to kidnap the woman ran away. It was at this time (or more accurately the next day) that Oden met his future wife, Toki. At the same time, Whitebeard accepted that he be part of his crew aboard the Moby Dick . Note that in addition to Izô, there were also the Minks Inuarashi and Nekomamushi on board.
Throughout his journeys with the Whitebeard Pirates, Oden gained notoriety as an outlaw and had a capture bounty like the others, but the amount of which is unknown to this day. He married Toki and had two children: a boy Momonoke and a girl Hiyori. As Whitebeard's crew grew and was divided, he was chosen to be Commander of the Second Fleet. When they met Gol D. Roger's crew, Oden immediately rushed to steal their treasure, 💰 which sparked a heated battle between the two crews for three whole days. It was not until the fourth day that a truce was concluded. When Roger revealed to Oden his wish to become the next Pirate Lord , while the latter knew how to decipher poneglyphs, the two, with the approval of Whitebeard, decided to continue sailing together to reach the last island. Oden therefore became a member of Roger's crew aboard the Oro Jackson. He was accompanied by his wife, his children as well as the Minks Inuarashi and Nekomamushi who followed him everywhere. However, the latter were later disembarked from the ship 🚢 at Wano Kuni when Toki fell ill. After multiple stops on different islands reading poneglyphs, Roger, Oden and the entire crew eventually found the last island and Joy Boy's treasure . As they all laughed when they discovered the treasure, the island was named Laugh Tale.
After this, Oden left Roger's crew and returned to Wano to join his wife and children. Unfortunately, it was there that he discovered what Orochi and Emperor Kaido had done to his country and wanted to confront them. Following his final defeat against Kaido (see details above in the article), Oden found himself on the verge of being executed by scalding in a pot. 🍯 When the day came, Oden made Kaido promise to allow his men who survived the execution to have their lives saved. Kaido agreed to the deal for anyone who would still be alive after an hour. Oden then entered the pot filled with boiling water and ordered his vassals to stand over the enormous wooden plank he held on his shoulders. An hour of torture later, Oden was still alive standing in the pot. And when Orochi wanted to kill them all with a firing squad, he threw the Nine Red Scabbards out of the pot and ordered them one last time to run towards the castle. 🏰 And it was finally with a bullet that Oden fell while he shouted to the crowd " The more Oden is boiled... ", a sentence that the inhabitants finished together: " ...The better it is ! ". It was therefore with a smile on his face that Kozuki Oden gave up the ghost with his body completely immersed in the pot. After his death, Kuri Castle was burned down with Toki, Oden's wife, inside. However, their two children survived as did all of the Nine Red Scabbards. Momonosuke and four of the Red Scabbards (Kinemon, Kanjuro, Raizo and Kikunojo) were sent 20 years into the future by Toki before dying. Kawamatsu was tasked with protecting Hiyori, which he did, taking care of her for 7 years without ever failing.
