Poneglyphs, the History of One Piece

Poneglyphs are stones that are extremely precious ✨, because they carry, in one way or another, elements of history engraved in them .

The language used on these poneglyphs is not known to the entire world and only a few people still alive have the ability to understand what they say.

Although everything that has been written about the poneglyphs has not yet been revealed to us, we do know that they are there to guide a certain person 🏴‍☠️ to their destiny on the final island, Laugh Tale.

The introduction of Poneglyphs in One Piece

Crocodail Poneglyph

Although poneglyphs are of huge importance in the story of One Piece, they appeared much later in the manga 🕰. Oda first introduced them to us properly in One Piece manga chapter 202, during the Alabasta arc .

In the anime, the poneglyphs debut much earlier , in episode 123 of the series. Interestingly, a poneglyph also appears in an episode of the Alabasta arc (Episode 102) 🏜.

The Meaning of Poneglyphs

Eiichiro Oda, the creator of One Piece, is quite clear on the meaning of the word "Poneglyph." From what we know, Poneglyph means "story text" , which is precisely the definition of these 📄.

Each poneglyph has a bit of history engraved on it 💎and only by studying it can one understand the true history of the One Piece world. So far, only a handful of pirates have managed to do this, but there are many pirates still hunting them today.

The Creators of the Poneglyphs

History of Poneglyphs

As poneglyphs are witnesses of history , it is obvious that they were carved in stone a long time ago. We know that they have existed since the time of the Forgotten Century.

Additionally, it was recently revealed to fans that those who carved the poneglyphs were the members of the Kozuki clan from the country of Wano 🔨. Poneglyphs have been passed down from generation to generation, all thanks to the Kozuki clan and their efforts to preserve history.

Those who can read

Nico Robin

The study of poneglyphs is considered a crime ⚡ in the world of One Piece under the laws of the world government . Those who practice the art of studying poneglyphs are hunted down and eradicated. The World Government ensured that all residents of Ohara who could actually read these texts were killed .

The only known person capable of reading poneglyphs is Nico Robin of the Straw Hat Pirates. She's also from Ohara, and as you might expect, she's being pursued by the World Government ⚓.

Poneglyphs are Indestructible

Momonosuke

Poneglyphs are made of a strange material known to be indestructible . It is known that members of the Kozuki family carved them during the Forgotten Century, but it is not known exactly how they made the stone indestructible.

Due to their indestructible nature, the World Government is unable to destroy these stones. Instead, they chose to ban the study of these stones and threaten the entire world in an attempt to deter, mainly to keep their secrets hidden. So far, their way of keeping things hidden seems to have worked well 🤫.

Types of Poneglyphs

Nico Robin

There are several different poneglyphs that we have seen in One Piece so far. They can be classified into three different types. The first type is the ancient type , which tells the reader a message ✉ written by the ancient inhabitants of the world of One Piece.

The second type of poneglyphs is " Informational Poneglyphs " and these stones indicate to the user the location of other geoglyphs 🧭, most likely Ancient Pon'glyphs. The final type of poneglyph is known as the Road Poneglyph , and they are essential for those looking for the location of the final island, Laugh Tale.

Road Poneglyphs

Monkey D. Luffy

As mentioned above, the Road Poneglyphs are extremely special, and probably of the utmost importance to a pirate looking to locate the location of Laugh Tale. There are four known Road Poneglyphs in total and once someone finds all four of them and pieces together what they say, they get the location of Laugh Tale 🏝 .

In addition, Road Poneglyphs are distinguished from others by their dark red color , instead of the usual blue. These stones are also much more difficult to find and are guarded most of the time by those to whom they are entrusted ⚔.

The Number of Poneglyphs

30 Poneglyphs

During the Whole Cake Island arc of One Piece, we learn that there are thirty poneglyphs in the world. Of these thirty poneglyphs, we know that four are Road Poneglyphs . The other twenty-six are either Historical Poneglyphs or Informational Poneglyphs ℹ.

Tamago, one of the veterans of Big Mom 🍰, mentioned that only by bringing all of the Poneglyphs to the final island , Laugh Tale, can the true history of the world of One Piece be revealed.

Ancient Weapons

One Piece Ancient Weapon

The world of One Piece has several hidden powerful weapons that are considered weapons of mass destruction 💥 . These weapons were created by the people of the Old Kingdom a long time ago.

By reading Ancient Poneglyphs, one can also discover the location of Ancient Weapons. The Poneglyph of Alabasta indicates the location of the ancient weapon Pluto , while the Poneglyph of Skypiea indicates the location of Poseidon . Until now we don't know the location of Uranus 🤔.

The Rio Poneglyph

Rio Poneglyph

The Rio Poneglyph is probably the most important poneglyph in the world of One Piece. According to Nico Robin, the Rio Poneglyph contains all the history of the world , because it contains the message of all the poneglyphs across the seas 🌊.

The only way to find the Rio Poneglyph is to collect all the other poneglyphs one finds on one's journey and bring them back to Laugh Tale. It is interesting to note that the Rio Poneglyph is not just a simple poneglyph.

Tamago mentioned the possibility that the Rio Poneglyph is made up of 9 different poneglyphs, which when brought together in Laugh Tale will reveal the truth about the history of the world of One Piece and the Forgotten Century 📖.
