Sabo

Sabo

Sabo is part of the powerful military organization opposing the World Government called The Revolutionaries or the Revolutionary Army. He is the second most influential member of this movement after Monkey D. Dragon aka Dragon the Revolutionary (Luffy's father) who is precisely its leader.

Born into a family of nobles from the Kingdom of Goa located on the island of Dawn, Sabo is the son of Outlook III and Didit. He has an adoptive brother named Sterry who is the current king 🤴🏼 of the Kingdom of Goa. Additionally, he became the spiritual brother of Monkey D. Luffy and Portgas D. Ace after the three toasted together and exchanged their sake cups which represent the cup of brotherhood.

After he was believed to be dead when a Celestial Dragon blew up his ship, Sabo resurfaces in the Dressrosa Arc. He had come, among other things, to win the Mera Mera no Mi, the Devil Fruit of his late adoptive brother Ace, in the tournament organized in the Corrida Coliseum. We discover in the third volume of One Piece Magazine that the bounty for capturing Sabo amounted to 602,000,000 Berrys.

Sabo Appearance

Sabo Appearance

It's in a Luffy flashback that we meet Sabo when he was still a 10-year-old kid (same age as Ace in fact). At that time, you could see him with one tooth 🦷 missing and a plaster taped to his nose. Her hair is blonde, cut short and curly. On his head he had a large black top hat, on which he had placed a pair of blue glasses. He was still dressed in a blue jacket whose sleeves he rolled up as well as cyan blue shorts 🩳 held at his waist by a black belt. The latter has a metal buckle with a flower motif. Added to this, he always wore a white scarf around his neck like a tie. 👔 At that time, in the dilapidated and disreputable streets of Gray Terminal , he walked around with a simple pipe as a weapon. At first glance, he looked like what you might call a street kid.

Once he became an adult, Sabo barely changed compared to his appearance when he was still a child. Note that he was born on March 20 and he was 22 years old just after the ellipse which lasted two years. He is of average height and still has the same big hat 🎩 as well as the same glasses. He always wears a white scarf around his neck and reaching to his chest. His blonde hair is now shoulder-length and his left eye is surrounded by a scar that looks like a burn. He now wears a black coat that he puts over a dark-colored jacket with small buttons. He shed the shorts in favor of blue pants 👖 and boots. He is still armed with a classic pipe but which is now larger than the one he had before.

Sabo's personality

Sabo's personality

Sabo is presented as a fairly sensible character and, like Luffy, he is considerate towards the people he loves. We can also see that he is fair when he fights and does not apply preferential treatment to his opponent as when he fought against Admiral Issho alias Fujitora . Despite the fact that the latter is blind, 👨🏼‍🦯 Sabo treated him as an equal and confronts him until the end. Furthermore, despite never becoming a pirate like his spiritual brothers, Sabo was very determined to make his dream come true when he was still a kid. As a pirate, he planned to travel and visit the whole world to tell in a book 📖 the stories as well as the places he would see during his travels. And yet, in order to protect his spiritual brothers, he was willing to let go of this dream. Sabo indeed shows a lot of loyalty towards Luffy and Ace even to the point of accepting his father's conditions and living unhappy and alone in order to save them. Luffy even said that Sabo is nicer compared to Ace. He supported them, encouraged them and knew how to use diplomacy.

Furthermore, even though Sabo is of noble lineage, he does not consider himself superior to others and never behaves selfishly. Unlike other members of his family, 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 being a noble does not mean a special status for him. He did not see people who were not noble as beings who were inferior to him. On the contrary, he abhors his values. He sometimes regretted being born a noble and was even ashamed of it. His disgust with this status is such that he even intended to leave the Kingdom of Goa at the age of 17 since a person truly inherits the status of noble only when he reaches the age of majority. , 18 years old. Finally, he left when he was only 10 years old. 👦🏼 When we saw him after the timeskip, aged 22, we could see that Sabo had retained a lot of his former personality.

Furthermore, he has also shown behaviors similar to those of Luffy such as when he mispronounces people's names. He also often cuts off a call 📞 in progress, which tends to annoy his friends. And when he knows or feels that Luffy is in danger, he neglects everything he is doing, even if it concerns his responsibilities within the Revolutionary Army. This action is due to the fact that he was unable to protect or save Ace from his execution at Marine Ford . Because of this, he began to show a very strong protective feeling towards Luffy, which is quite ironic considering that, during his lifetime, Ace had also been overprotective of Luffy following Sabo's supposed death 🪦.

Sabo's battles

Sabo vs. Fujitora

Sabo vs. Fujitora

It is in the Dressrosa Arc in Chapter 751 of the manga, entitled Sabo against Admiral Fujitora, and in episode 687 of the anime, with the title "A big clash! The leader of the Sabo team against the 'Admiral Fujitora' , which began the confrontation between the blind Admiral 👮🏼‍♂️ and the number 2 of the Revolutionary Army. It followed the fight between the latter and Vice-Admiral Bastille as well as several soldiers of the Navy and which resulted in the easy and rapid victory of the revolutionary. An exchange then followed between the two characters, during which Sabo revealed to the Admiral that he is the spiritual brother of Ace and Luffy. He continued by telling him that if the latter ever calls him for help, he will come wherever he is in the world and no matter what he is doing because he no longer wants to relive the misfortune of the death of Ace. Admiral Fujitora then drew his saber ⚔️ while Sabo activated the pyrokinetic power of his Devil Fruit . And their confrontation began with a fiery attack from Sabo with his cane which the Admiral was able to easily block with his blade while the Marine soldiers who were around were thrown into the air.

Afterwards, the fight between Sabo and Fujitora intensified more and more, which surrounded the area with a barrier of fire. 🔥 However, the Blind Admiral was able to ward off each of the Revolutionary's subsequent attacks. Then, Issho tried to pin Sabo to the ground by manipulating gravity but he was able to escape by bursting into flames. The Admiral then continued by creating a black hole in the direction of Sabo but the latter used his Ryuusouken technique: Ryu no Ibuki in order to stop the evolution of the black hole. Sabo took advantage of the smoke screen 💨 caused by his technique to launch a new attack but his opponent was able to parry it again. After that, Admiral Fujitora asked Sabo to go more gently in his attacks since he was blind but Luffy's brother replied that he does not discriminate. Issho then unleashed horizontal gravity using a technique called Gravity Sword: Fierce Tiger . Despite the force of this gravity, Sabo was able to move by igniting himself and using fire to glide. He attacked again and his kick 🦶🏼 caused a huge explosion of fire that set the entire area on fire. And yet, Issho was able to block this attack with his blade. It was at this point that the Admiral told Sabo that if he truly wanted to bet this game against him, he must be prepared to pay a high price: his own life. This is how the fight ended without victory or defeat for either party.

Sabo vs. Jesus Burgess

Sabo vs. Jesus Burgess

This confrontation also took place in the Dressrosa Arc shortly after the fight between Sabo and Admiral Fujitora (between chapters 786 and 792 of the manga and between episodes 728 and 735 of the anime). Luffy found himself in a delicate situation after using all his resources with Gear Fourth to defeat Captain Corsair ☠️ Don Quixote Doflamingo . Exhausted, he needed a few minutes to recover his Haki. So he was at the mercy of his opponent and anyone else. Having noticed the failure of the Straw Hat Pirate, Jesus Burgess aka Champion wanted to take the opportunity to kill him and grab his Devil Fruit, the Gumo Gumi no Mi. Coming out of the shadows, he threw himself at Luffy with a dagger 🗡️ in hand but at the same time, Sabo also appeared and intervened to save his brother. He sent Burgess flying into the scenery with a terrible kick to the head.

An exchange then followed between Number 2 of the Revolutionary Army and the commander of the 1st fleet of the Blackbeard Pirates . Sabo revealed to him that Luffy and Ace are his brothers and that even if he does not want revenge for Ace's death, he will do anything to protect his other brother. He also revealed to him that he was the holder of the Mera Mera no Mi, which aroused Burgess's interest. The latter then decided to attack Sabo using his Galleon Lariat technique, which cut the Revolutionary in two as well as the building 🏢 behind him. Fortunately, thanks to his Devil Fruit which is of the Logia type, this attack had no repercussions on Sabo who was able to reconstitute himself immediately afterwards. He counterattacked with one of his techniques, Moeru Ryusouken: Kaen Ryuoqui is a combination of flames from Mera Mera no Mi and Ryosouken, his bare-handed martial art. 👐🏼 Hit head on, the Blackbeard pirate found himself thrown far away while suffering from burns.

Sabo vs. Jesus Burgess

After recovering his Haki, Luffy was finally able to knock out Doflamingo. For his part, Sabo also managed to defeat Burgess but spared his life because he thought it was not necessary to kill him since everything was over. However, Burgess began to provoke him by mocking his brother Ace and his death. He had in mind the idea of killing the Revolutionary by surprise by stabbing him with the knife 🔪 which he was hiding behind his back. His plan almost worked because, angry, Sabo approached him and took his head in his hands while telling him to be quiet. But when he tried to stab him by aiming for the head, Sabo was able to dodge the blow and attacked him with a lightning strike with his Hiken or Ardent Fist , a technique he uses in homage to Ace. Burgess will then find himself thrown into the rubble, without being able to get up, and this permanently.

Sabo's Abilities

Sabo's Abilities

When the three spiritual brothers were still children, Sabo had almost the same strength as Ace. As an adult, he took part in a major operation with the Revolutionary Army in Dressrosa while the Navy and the Don Quixote Family also participated. He notably took Luffy's place during the gladiator tournament 🤼‍♂️ which was held in the Corrida Colosseum or Coliseum Corrida and won the victory as well as the trophy, the Mera Mera no Mi. Note also that after Monkey D. Dragon, he is the second strongest member among the Revolutionaries, which proves his great strength. This is notably seen in his ability to imitate the claws of a dragon with his fists when fighting or to break steel objects such as sabers, ⚔️ rifles or even bazookas with great ease and just with force. with his hands. Another proof of his strength is that he was able to measure up to and match Fujitora who is, as an Admiral, one of the three most powerful officers in the Navy after the Admiral Commander-in-Chief.

One Piece Painting Sabo Revolutionary Army

Sabo also possesses mastery of Busoshoku no Haki or Weaponry Haki . He was notably seen using this power in combination with his Ryu no Kagizume or Dragon's Claw technique to shatter Jesus Burgess' armor 🛡️ into thousands of pieces in the Corrida Colosseum arena. He also uses this Haki when using the Ryusoken. Note in passing that Sabo is particularly gifted in mastering this martial art which is based on the hands. One of his attacks based on this Haki is the Ryuusouken: Ryu no Ibuki or Dragon Fists: The Breath of the Dragon which allows him to explode 💥 everything that is under the ground just by sinking his two fists into it. Sabo used this technique in chapter 743 of the manga when he destroyed the Colosseum Corrida stage and won the tournament.

It is also proven that Number 2 of the Revolutionary Army is also experienced in the use of Kenbunshoku no Haki or Observation Haki . He was seen using this Sensitive Fluid in episode 737 of the anime in order to dodge a burst of shots (he has never used it in the manga yet). Like when he was a child, Sabo still uses his weapon of choice, an iron pipe, when he fights but this weapon is now larger. Additionally, thanks to the power of his Devil Fruit, he is now able to ignite his metal pipe like a fire stick.

Devil Fruit: Mera Mera no Mi

Devil Fruit: Mera Mera no Mi

Thanks to his victory in the Corrida Coliseum, Sabo was able to win the Mera Mera no Mi, a Logia-type Devil Fruit 💦👿 that previously belonged to his adoptive brother Portgas D. Ace. This Devil Fruit offers its user pyrokinetic powers, namely the ability to create fire, control it or even transform their body into fire according to their needs. He thus literally becomes a Fireman. His attacks linked to his Devil Fruit thus use fire as a basis and he tolerates even extreme heat very well. When the user's body becomes fire, they can burn their opponent(s) depending on the range of their attack. Additionally, his physical attacks can also be enhanced by the use of fire. Added to this, its holder does not fear the vast majority of physical attacks as long as they are not imbued with Weaponry Haki, this is due to the fact that it is a Devil Fruit 🫐 of Logia type.

Thanks to its Logia nature, the one who has eaten this Devil Fruit is able to confront other Logia users, such as Smoker and his smoke with the Moku Moki no Mi or Aokiji and his ice ❄️ with the Hie Hie no Mi. However, this strength is also a weakness since the powers of his three Devil Fruits cancel each other out. In addition, another of the weaknesses of the Mera Mera no Mi is that it is hierarchically inferior to the Magu Magu no Mi of Admiral Commander-in-Chief Sakazuki alias Akainu in the ranking of Devil Fruits. It is therefore weaker. It turns out that the flames of Mera Mera no Mi can be smothered by magma. Despite the intangibility of Logia-type Demon Fruits, the user of Mera Mera no Mi can be severely or even fatally burned, as was the case for Ace.

Devil Fruit: Mera Mera no Mi

During his lifetime, Portgas D. Ace aka Ace of the Fiery Fists used his pyrokinetic powers both to fight and to operate his motorized, wheeled and sailed boat 🚣🏼‍♂️, the Striker. He used them in more than ten techniques, such as Kagero, Enkei or Jujika. You should know that Ace already possessed his abilities three years before he saw Luffy again in the Kingdom of Alabasta. As for Sabo, he was immediately able to call upon the powers of Mera Mera no Mi within seconds of eating it. However, he did not know how to use it optimally at first. It happened to him to inflame his body without wanting to and then to have burning sensations, sometimes even only psychologically. However, shortly after, he was able to transmit his powers to his staff as all Logia-type Devil Fruit users can do. He also managed to become intangible, which prevents him from being injured. 🩸 For the moment, we only know two techniques using his Devil Fruit, namely Hiken or Fire Fist and Moeru Ryusoken: Kaen Ryuo or Dragon Flame Fists: Flames of the Dragon King . Note that Sabo was seen training to master his powers after the events of Dressrosa.

Sabo's story

Character Origins

Character Origins

Sabo was born in the Kingdom of Goa, on the island of Dawn which is located in the East Blue sea zone . Coming from noble parents, he was predestined to marry a daughter of the nobility so that the respect due to his family name would be preserved. And yet, his parents seemed to pay little attention to Sabo's well-being and happiness. When his father came home tired from work, he sent his son straight to his room to study while tearing up one of his drawings. As for his mother, instead of treating her son who was injured with a knife during a fight between Sabo and the son of a royal family, 👑 she preferred to apologize to the latter. It is more important to him to preserve relations with this royal family than to take care of his damaged son. For his parents, Sabo only served to guarantee their comfort and social status. This is the reason why, at the age of 10, little Sabo made his parents believe that he was dead and escaped from the family home to join the Gray Terminal, a lawless zone having the appearance of a huge open-air public landfill 🗑️ where the rejects of society (outlaws, pirates and bandits) hide.

Luffy, Ace and Sabo

Luffy, Ace and Sabo

Some time after his arrival at Gray Terminal, he met Ace. For 5 years, the two kids amassed money 💰 by becoming real thieves respected by other criminals (probably for their incredible combat skills). Note that their goal was to become pirates and buy a boat with their loot. This is also the reason why Ace always tried to run away from his adopted little brother Luffy who also wanted to follow in their footsteps and become a pirate. 🏴‍☠️ Subsequently, after fighting together and defeating the pirate Porchemy, a member of the Bluejam Pirates , in order to save Luffy, the three kids found themselves living together with D adan and the mountain bandits. Later, they exchanged cups of sake and drank them to confirm their brotherhood. Since that day, the three spiritual brothers have done everything together. Unfortunately, some time later, Sabo was found by his father helped by the Bluejam pirates to confront Ace and Luffy, or even kill them. In order to allow his adopted brothers to escape, Sabo reluctantly and tearfully agreed to follow his father while Ace screamed for him to stay.

After he was brought back to his town and returned to his house, 🏚️ he met Sterry who is his new adopted brother. The latter confided to him the existence of an imminent plot orchestrated by the nobles as well as the royal family whose goal is to set fire to the Gray Terminal before inspectors from the World Government arrive. Sabo then took off again to warn people and find help. Unfortunately, all the nobles knew of this Machiavellian plan and refused their help. It was only after the fires had started and spread that he was able to reach the main gate. 🚪 As soon as he could shout at Ace and Luffy to run and escape the place, he was pushed aside by the soldiers guarding the door. It was ultimately Monkey D. Dragon who found him and to whom he revealed what was going on. Subsequently, he was caught again by his father, locked up and then escaped again aboard his own boat. The latter was destroyed by Saint Jalmack, a World Noble and it was reported to Ace and Luffy that Sabo was dead.

However, Sabo was actually saved by Monkey D. Dragon and brought back by the latter on his boat ⛵ to the members of the Revolutionary Army. It unfortunately turns out that Ace and Luffy's adopted brother lost his memory during his accident. Subsequently, he was accepted into the Revolutionaries and underwent both intellectual and physical training on the island of Baltigo alias "The White Earth" or "The Land of Mysteries" where the first headquarters of the Revolution was located. Army of Revolutionaries. Throughout his training, he was able to demonstrate his abilities and reflexes in combat despite having lost his memory. He also gradually and very quickly managed to stand up to the highest members of the organization, with the exception of Dragon who knocked him out with a single blow when he wanted to attack him. By the time he was 17, he had already achieved some fame among the Revolutionaries for being able to infiltrate a fortress on his own and free the hostages while destroying the castle. He later became the second most powerful member of the organization after Dragon.

Sabo in Dressrosa

Sabo in Dressrosa

Twelve years after his disappearance, Sabo reappeared in the Dressrosa Arc during the Corrida Coliseum tournament after he was infiltrated and interrupted a conversation between the Straw Hat Pirate 👒 and Bartolomeo aka the Crazy Rookie . Luffy didn't recognize him right away at first but then burst into tears when he understood while throwing himself into his arms. After a very emotional exchange between the two brothers, Luffy gave up his place in the tournament to Sabo so that he could win the Mera Mera no Mi and eat it. Once disguised as Lucy, Sabo entered the arena and quickly sought to recover the Devil Fruit by grabbing onto the fighting fish where it was located. However, Jesus Burgess countered him and the two characters clashed in a fierce battle which resulted, among other things, in the fracture of Burgess's armor. Subsequently, Sabo made the decision to shorten the final because he absolutely had to emerge victorious and had other pressing concerns. To do this, he destroyed the stage, found the Mera Mera no Mi and ate it.

Once safe in the basement with Rebecca and his Revolutionary Army teammates Koala and Hack , he revealed the real reason for their presence in Dressrosa. They had come to investigate and stop the illegal arms trafficking 🔫 which Don Quixote Doflamingo was involved in in order to avoid possible conflicts that this business could cause in the future. Later, we find him facing soldiers and senior officers of the Navy. He blocked them in order to protect Luffy and his comrades because he said it was his responsibility as a big brother. He quickly defeated Vice-Admiral Bastille aka The Shark Slicer 🦈 as well as several Marines and then confronted Admiral Fujitora. The two protagonists ended their hellish fight without winner or loser because they were too exhausted.

Sabo in Dressrosa

Then, after saving the inhabitants of Dressrosa and freeing the prisoners from the Colosseum, he set out to find the storage location for Doflamingo's weapons. During an exchange with Koala by snailphone, 🐌 he learned that his brother Luffy could find himself in danger. Without wasting a single minute, he joined Luffy and narrowly managed to save him from Jesus Burgess who was trying to kill him in order to seize the Straw Hat Pirate's Devil Fruit, the Gomu Gomu no Mi. A new fight then began between Sabo and Burgess which ended with the latter's crushing defeat.

For his part, Luffy finally managed to beat Doflamingo. Besides, Koala and Hack had managed to find what they had come for, namely the "list", and were ready to leave. After Sabo told his story to the Mugiwara in Kyros' house, he had to leave the island 🏝️ because the Cipher Pol Aigis Zero or CP-0 (CP-AIGIS0) was heading back towards Dressrosa. We therefore see him flying away on the back of a black crow which is none other than Karasu, commander of the Northern army affiliated with the Revolutionaries.
