Founded and led by Marshall D. Teach aka Blackbeard , the Blackbeard Pirates include various pirate antagonists. Captain: Marshall D. Teach:
We therefore find at the head of this crew Marshall D. Teach who, a few years ago, was part of the Whitebeard Pirates 🧙🏼♂️ within the second division under the orders of Portgas D. Ace . He fled after killing Thatch, another member of the crew and commander of the Fourth Division, to steal his Devil Fruit, the Yami Yami no Mi. It was from then on that he founded his own crew and recruited pirates whose crimes were so unspeakable that their stories were erased from memory. Pursued by Ace for his betrayal of Whitebeard, he confronted him on the island of Banaro and defeated him thanks to his Devil Fruit which could cancel the powers of other Devil Fruits. And it was by delivering Ace to the Navy that he achieved the status of Corsair Captain in place of Crocrodile . 🐊 However, he did not keep this title for long as he took the opportunity to recruit other, even more powerful members from level 6 of the underwater prison of Impel Down.
Blackbeard is considered the great rival of Edward Newgate aka Whitebeard who is also his former mentor. Furthermore, it was he and his crew (apart from Sanjuan Wolf) who killed the latter during the famous Battle of Marine Ford. The death of Whitebeard notably allowed him to appropriate a second Devil Fruit 🍇, the Gura Gura no Mi, and to capture the title of Yonkô during the two-year ellipse. He is part of this group of pirates called the Worst Generation and world famous for their crimes. Teach is what we can call the ultimate antagonist in the One Piece series. He was the second antagonist in the Jaya Arc, the third antagonist in the Impel Down Arc and also the third antagonist in the Marine Ford Arc.
Tremor Devil Fruit: The Gura Gura no Mi
During the Battle of Marine Ford, when Whitebeard was already badly injured, Blackbeard and his pirates finished him off in a nine-on-one fight. He then used a sheet to hide behind the body of the deceased ⚰️ and retrieve the latter's Devil Fruit, the Gura Gura no Mi. With his other Devil Fruit, the Yami Yami no Mi, Teach therefore becomes the only person to date known to possess two powers from two different Devil Fruits. It is important to note that until then, the series had always announced that this fact was impossible and that anyone who ate two Devil Fruits could only die. For the moment, there are several theories that explain how the fruit was obtained on Whitebeard's body and how teach was able to assimilate a second fruit.
Thus, Blackbeard became the new holder of the Quake Fruit, which transformed him into an Earthquake Man. Indeed, thanks to this power, he is capable of producing earthquakes in the form of seismic waves by striking the air to crack it as well as giant tsunamis 🌊. According to Sengoku the Buddha, the former Admiral Commander-in-Chief of the Navy , it is the strongest Paramecia-type Devil Fruit whose earthquakes and shock waves generated can destroy the world. He even recognizes that Gura Gura no Mi is the most powerful Devil Fruit, having a power equal to Logia-type Devil Fruits. Additionally, this Devil Fruit appears to have no particular weaknesses, aside from the basic Devil Fruit weaknesses. Being a Paramecia type, its user is vulnerable to physical attacks and feels the pain linked to these attacks perfectly well. However, Blackbeard manages to overcome the deadly blows he receives each time thanks to incredible physical and mental resistance.
Dark Devil Fruit: The Yami Yami no Mi
Before acquiring the Gura Gura no Mi, Blackbeard already had another Devil Fruit that he stole from Thatch after killing him. This is the Yami Yami no Mi or Fruit of Darkness . It turns out that its user is able to generate darkness, become darkness, control darkness and therefore also gravity. He literally becomes a Darkman, capable of absorbing anything he wants, whether objects or living beings. History of the Blackbeard Pirates
The first mention of the Blackbeard Pirates took place in the Drum Arc where it talks about the sacking of the Drum Kingdom by Teach and his pirates. Their power was such and their attack so overwhelming that even Wapol the Tin Plate , the cruel king 🤴🏼 who governed the island, fled without defending his kingdom or fighting a single battle. However, it was in the Jaya Arc that the first member of this crew was visually seen in the person of Laffitte The Demon Sheriff. He was seen coming to the Holy Land of Mary Geoise with the aim of recommending its captain Blackbeard for the post of Grand Corsair in place of Crocodile.
Subsequently, the other members were seen on Jaya Island in Mock Town where they were playing different games 🎰 to test their fate. It was at this time that Blackbeard met Monkey D. Luffy for the first time in a bar and we noticed that the two characters have very different opinions, even opposed on many levels (food and drinks of the bar in particular). After Teach and his crew learned of Luffy's high capture bounty, they attempted to capture him, but, before they could do anything, the phenomenon called Knock-Up Stream knocked the entire Crew of Straw Hat in the sky.
We then find the Teach crew in the Post-Enies Lobby Arc when Portgas D. Ace finds them while they are pillaging a village located on the island 🏝️ of Banaro. A clash ensued between them which ended with Ace's defeat and his capture. Thanks to this, Blackbeard finds himself appointed to the title of Grand Corsair. Subsequently, during preparations for the impending war for Ace's execution in the Impel Down Arc, the crew travels to Impel Down aboard a stolen Navy ship to free and recruit the most powerful criminals locked up on level 6 of Impel Down prison. During this event, they crushed the Marine rescue team and encountered Jinbe, Bon Clay, Inazuma, Daz Bones, Crocodile as well as Luffy who had come to rescue Ace. During their incursion into Impel Dow, the Blackbeard Pirates were poisoned by Deputy Director Magellan with his Hydra attack but were saved by Shilliew with an antidote. 💉 The latter therefore agreed to join Blackbeard after saying that he was waiting for a person like him to leave Impel Down.
We then find them in the Marine Ford Arc where we see Blackbeard asking Sengoku for the right to become one of the Shichibukai. He was then brutally attacked by Whitebeard and, just as he was about to be killed, he ordered his crew to attack their attacker. Together with his crew, he eventually kills Edward Newgate and steals his Devil Fruit, the Gura Gura no Mi.
He then declared that the new era is now his and that he will destroy Marine Ford. In response, Sengoku attacked him and his crew with a super-powered Buddha-shaped attack. However, the Teach pirates had no trouble resisting this shock wave. Next comes a brief fight 🤼 between Monkey D. Garp, the Hero of the Navy, and Jesus Burgess and between Teach and Sengoku. That's when Red Shanks and his crew arrive to stop the war. Shanks wanted to confront Teach, but the latter decided to leave believing that it was not yet time for their confrontation.
In the Post-Marine Ford Arc, the Blackbeard Pirates landed in the New World and captured Jewelry Bonney and her crew on a burning island in order to trade her for a new ship to the Navy. Seeing Akainu on his warship and realizing that the Navy would not keep their end of the bargain, they fled, leaving Bonney behind. Then, during the timeskip, Blackbeard and his crew experienced what is known as the War of Vengeance , a battle during which they had to face the crew of Marco the Phoenix, commander of the second division of the fleet of White beard.
Unfortunately, the fight quickly turned in favor of Blackbeard and his family, which allowed the latter to win the title of Shichibukai. They then began to annex all the islands that had been under the protectorate of the former Emperor, Whitebeard. We then learn from Jinbe that the Blackbeard pirates would also be looking for all those who possess Devil Fruits to steal their powers. They would even also covet Monkey D. Luffy's Gomu Gomu no Mi.
We then see one of the members of the Blackbeard Pirates, Jesus Burgess, participating in the Corrida Colosseum tournament and arriving in the final phase, the Battle Royal, after having defeated all his opponents in Block A under the assumed name by Mr Store. He then discovers that the other competitor named Lucy is none other than Monkey D. Luffy by analyzing his combat techniques. Subsequently, it was finally Lucy (now Sabo) who managed to appropriate Ace's Mera Mera no Mi , which frustrated Burgess. And during the final confrontation between Luffy and Don Quixote Doflamingo , Burgess tried to eliminate the captain of the Straw Hat Pirates 👒 to recover the coveted Devil Fruit.
However, he was stopped by Sabo and the two clashed after Burgess realized that it was he who held the Mera Mera no Mi. Luffy's spiritual brother managed to defeat Burgess aka The Champion and when the latter provoked him into speaking of the death of Ace (his other spiritual brother), Sabo hit him head-on with the Burning Fist technique to "finish" him.
Subsequently, we learn during the meeting between the new Admiral Commander-in-Chief of the Navy Sakazuki and the Council of Five Elders 👴🏼 (or Five Elders, the highest authority within the World Government) , that the ex- Navy Admiral Kuzan had allied himself with Blackbeard and his crew. During the Zo and Tougato Arcs, the Blackbeard Pirates attacked and destroyed the Revolutionary headquarters on Bartigo Island after Burgess secretly visited it. During the Wano Kuni Arc, we discover Blackbeard and certain members of his crew (Catarina Devon, Avalo Pizarro and Shiliew) on Pirate Island also called the Hive or HoneyComb Island where they have set up Teach's residence. We then learn from the former Corsair Captain Gecko Moria that the Blackbeard pirates are on the hunt for the Devil Fruit holders. It was also revealed that Catarina Devon became commander of the Blackbeard Pirates' sixth fleet and consumed the Canid Fruit 🐕 or Inu Inu no Mi, Kyubi model. As for Avalo Pizarro, he was given the position of commander of the Fourth Fleet and Shiliew inherited the Fruit of Invisibility or Suke Suke no Mi after they killed its previous holder, Absalom. It was in this arc that Whitebeard made the declaration that the terrible final and bloody battle for the title of king had already begun as a large number of legendary pirates were regrouping in Wano Kuni. Blackbeard Pirates
Jesus Burgess
Nicknamed Champion, Jesus Burgess is both the Helmsman and commander of the Blackbeard Pirates' first fleet since timeskip. He has the particularity of having impressive physical strength to the point that he is capable of lifting an entire building 🏨. In particular, he was able to tear an entire hotel out of the ground and throw it at Ace from afar during their confrontation. Additionally, during his participation in a tournament at the Corrida Colosseum, he defeated all of his challengers in Block A in a single attack (a technique similar to Weaponry Haki ) to finish as a finalist. Jesus Burgess also has excellent stamina. We could see this when he directly received a shock wave produced by Admiral Sengoku while the latter was in his Buddha form without suffering major damage. The same happened when he was hit with a direct punch from former Navy Vice Admiral Monkey D. Garp, the Hero of the Navy .
Jesus Burgess stands out for his mastery of two types of Haki, namely Weaponry Haki and Observation Haki. He was notably seen using the Combat Fluid to strengthen his armor and protect himself from the attack of Sabo, Luffy's second spiritual brother and one of the most important members of the Revolutionary Army, during the finale at Corrida Colosseum. Unfortunately, his Weaponry Haki wasn't strong enough to withstand the one that permeated Sabo's attack. His armor then shattered. Note also that Burgess uses on the one hand two pistols 🔫 which we saw him used against Whitebeard and on the other hand a rather imposing dagger which he used to try to kill Luffy and seize his Fruit of the Demon.
Shiliew
Becoming commander of Blackbeard's Second Fleet after the timeskip, Shiryu or (Shiliew de la Pluie in the French version) was the former head warden of the underwater prison of Impel Down. Because of his abuse of power, his extreme violence and his cruelty towards inmates, he was stripped of his position and imprisoned by Magellan, the deputy warden 👮🏼♂️ of Impel Down. It must be said that his power is equivalent to that of Magellan. However, Magellan managed to defeat him and lock him in a level 6 cell. Freed during the riot caused by Monkey D. Luffy and Marshall D. Teach in Impel Down, he joined the latter's crew and therefore became an outlaw. Shiliew also demonstrated extraordinary endurance when he directly withstood a shockwave from Admiral Sengoku in Buddha form without suffering much damage.
After the Blackbeard Pirates killed Absalom, the leader of the Zombie Soldiers 🧟♂️ and the Zombie Generals, Shiliew retrieved his Paramecia-type Devil Fruit, the Suke Suke no Mi or Fruit of Invisibility . Thanks to the latter, he has the ability to attack with a saber without his opponents noticing. Indeed, Suke Suke no Mi allows him to be invisible or to make objects invisible by simple direct contact. Note that the powers of this Devil Fruit apply to small objects as well as large objects such as portable cannons up to entire ships.
You should also know that Shiliew is an expert swordsman. He particularly excels in the handling of a specific type of sword, namely the Nodachi (large sword wielded with two hands). Furthermore, he is in possession of a Nodachi which is named Raiu and which is one of the Meito, these legendary sabers ⚔️ which are of excellent qualities. He used it to kill several Impel Down guards when they came to free him to fight Blackbeard and his crew, which he did not do but instead he betrayed Magellan and joined the Teach crew to become a pirate.
Van Augur
Next comes Van Augur nicknamed Supersonic , who happens to be the commander of Blackbeard's Third Fleet since the end of the timeskip. He also serves as a lookout 🕵🏼 and sniper within the Blackbeard Pirates. His powerful and capable eyesight has allowed him to become a valuable asset to Teach's crew. It was thanks to this that he was able to spot the Navy battleship led by Admiral Commander-in-Chief Sakazuki alias Akainu. To accomplish his task as a sniper, Van Augur uses a very long rifle called Senriku and which allows him to make long-distance shots. Additionally, his shots are so accurate that he was able to aim through the bullets of Impel Down Prison guards to reach their rifle barrels and destroy them. In addition to his incredible precision, he also has extraordinary speed both in shooting and running. Its nickname "the Supersonic" certainly comes from this great speed.
Avalo Pizarro
Avalo Pizarro aka the Depraved King was one of the prisoners held on Level 6 of Impel Down Prison who was freed by Marshall D. Teach and joined his crew. You should know that Pizarro was sentenced to life in prison because of his atrocious criminal acts. His existence was even erased from history because of the abomination of his crimes. Today, in addition to becoming the commander of the Blackbeard Pirates' fourth fleet, he is also one of the Ten Titanic Captains.
To date, no information has been released regarding Pizarro's powers. However, his past and the fact that he was held on Level 6 in Impel Down proves that he is a character of great power. Note also that, when Blackbeard came to free and recruit prisoners of this level, he was one of the only ones still alive following a fight to the death 🤺 between the prisoners in his block. He is therefore inevitably one of the strongest in the prison. Furthermore, he was able to easily resist the shock wave caused by Sengoku while he was in Buddha form, which also proves his robustness. It should be noted that this character has not been seen with any weapon in the manga. On the other hand, we see him in the anime using flintlock rifles during the confrontation against Whitebeard's crew.
Laffitte
This character nicknamed Lafitte the Demonic Sheriff is not only Blackbeard's Messenger but also the Navigator of his crew. After the timeskip, he became the commander of the Blackbeard Pirates' Fifth Fleet. Indeed, he is the one who guides the rest of the crew during their journeys on the seas even if we are currently unaware of his abilities as a navigator. Additionally, it should be noted that it does not have Log Pose, the only reliable navigation device for sailing the Grand Line. Lafitte has also demonstrated different abilities such as having wings 💸 on his back allowing him to fly. However, we do not know at this time if this power comes from a Devil Fruit or something else.
Another of his powers is similar to Soru, a technique allowing rapid movement. Additionally, he has the ability to hypnotize his victims to manipulate them as he pleases. He notably used this ability in Impel Down so that Marine soldiers would open the Doors of Justice for them. Just like his wings, we also don't know if this power comes from a Devil Fruit or something else. In terms of weapons, Lafitte used a pistol during their confrontation against Whitebeard. He also has a cane that he uses from time to time when he dances to accompany his tap dancing. However, it has not been revealed whether this cane could be used as a weapon for him or not.
Catarina Devon
The Blackbeard Pirates have only one woman; this is Catarina Devon who was also held in Impel Down before Teach and his pirates freed her. Originally from South Blue, she was also sentenced to life in prison because she chased down other women she found pretty in order to decapitate them and make a collection of their heads. 👩🏼🦰 She has now become the commander of the Blackbeard Pirates' Sixth Fleet. Even if we still do not know the full extent of her power, it cannot be doubted given that, in the entire Golden Age of piracy , she is the most dangerous woman. As further proof of her power, she is one of the prisoners on level 6 of Impel Down and she was recruited by Teach who only wanted the most powerful in the prison. Like all those mentioned before, she got up very quickly and with great ease after being hit by Sengoku's shockwave in Buddha form, which is a testament to her phenomenal endurance.
Thanks to the Inu Inu no Mi, Kyubi model, a mythical Zoan-type Devil Fruit , Catarina Devon has the power to metamorphose into a legendary creature from Asian folklore, the Kyubi, a nine-tailed fox 🦊. Additionally, she can also take on the appearance of other people and the transformation is successful enough to fool everyone, even those who know her. Usually, she uses a whip, but she has also been seen using a spear against Whitebeard. After the two years that the ellipse lasted, Catarina Devon now wields a saber. However, we do not yet know its real level.
Sanjuan Wolf
At the head of the Blackbeard Pirates' seventh fleet is another prisoner from level 6 of Impel Down Prison. This is Sanjuan Wolf, a giant from West Blue who is known to be the tallest and broadest character in the world of One Piece. Furthermore, because of its size, it is nicknamed The Colossal Warship or The Giant Walking Battleship. He joined Marshall D. Teach's crew after Teach freed him from Impel Down. Note that, like Avalo Pizarro, he has now become one of the Ten Titanic Captains. Although his abilities have not yet been revealed, he is sure that he is powerful enough to deserve to be locked up on level 6 of the underwater prison where the most dangerous criminals are kept.
Like the others recruited by Blackbeard, he was one of the only survivors of this prison 🏛️ after the battle royale that took place there. Despite his large size and build, Sanjuan Wolf was able to sneak into the Navy headquarters compound at Marine Ford without anyone detecting him. Additionally, he also ate a Devil Fruit which gave him the power to grow to a height of 180m. However, the name of this Devil Fruit has not been revealed at this time.
Vasco Shot
Commander of the Eighth Fleet, Vasco Shot aka The Hooch King 🍻 comes from South Blue. He was one of the worst criminals imprisoned for life in Impel Down and freed by Teach and his crew. Just like Wolf, his powers are unknown for the moment even if we cannot doubt his power given that he was locked at level 6 like those mentioned previously and that he was recruited by Blackbeard. During the Blackbeard Pirates' confrontation with Whitebeard, Vasco Shot used two guns to shoot the latter.
Doc Q
The last commander, that of the Ninth Fleet, of the Blackbeard Pirates is called Doc Q or The Reaper . His capture bounty amounts to over 72,000,000 Berrys. 💰 He is the crew's official doctor while he himself constantly displays a sick look, just like the horse that accompanies him. On the other hand, to date, he has not yet displayed all of his medical skills. Note the high sadism of this character due to the fact that he likes to share explosive apples with those he meets in order to test their luck. He congratulates those who are lucky and says he sympathizes with those who are unlucky. Furthermore, he hasn't been seen fighting yet, but given his condition, he doesn't look very combative.
However, Doc Q appears to have great physical strength given that he was seen paddling 🚣🏼 with Jesus Burgess. He also demonstrated that he possesses considerable speed when his captain ordered them to attack during their confrontation with Whitebeard. And, like the others, he proved that he had superhuman endurance by getting back up without much damage after being hit by Sengoku's shockwave. Doc Q carries around in his backpack 🎒 a double-edged scythe (hence his epithet of The Reaper) that he wielded when he attacked Whitebeard.
The strength of Blackbeard's crew
As was said in the introduction to this article, the power of the Blackbeard Pirates is significantly greater than most other pirate crews 💀 seen in the series to date. Today, it is even considered one of the four most powerful crews existing in the One Piece universe . Their history demonstrates this as when they attacked Drum Island with overwhelming force so much so that the cruel King Wapol fled without offering any resistance. Their unusual strength was proven when their captain quickly got up after suffering a direct attack from Ace. This is also the case for almost the entire crew as they were hit by Sengoku's Buddha-shaped shockwave. Another proof of their power is that they were easily able to enter Impel Down and reach level 4 even though this prison is renowned for being the safest and most secure in the World Government. Remember that it was Blackbeard and his pirates who finished off Whitebeard during the Battle of Marine Ford even though the latter had already suffered terrible injuries.
In a way, we can say that this crew is the evil copy of the Straw Hat Pirates . 👒 On the one hand, each member has a specific position and, on the other hand, they are both very powerful despite their notable differences. Furthermore, these two crews only recruit experts in their field. They even refused to take Jewelry Bonney as a member, believing that she was too weak even though she is part of the group of pirates of the worst generation called the Eleven Supernovae , which demonstrates the undeniable strength of this crew. Added to this, we can talk about the four new members recruited in Impel Down and who all turn out to be major criminals. Indeed, they were locked up on level 6 of this prison to be forever forgotten by history because their crimes were so terrible. However, the true strength of this crew lies in their captain, Blackbeard. Furthermore, after the timeskip, the Blackbeard Pirates became even more powerful. The pirates of this crew are constantly looking for pirates with a Devil Fruit 🍒 to grab and make the crew even more powerful. Today, the crew includes nine fleets and according to Gatz, Blackbeard now has 10 Titanic Captains . Finally, the crew is even more dangerous than before, because they have allied themselves with Kuzan alias Aokiji, the former Admiral of the Navy.
Blackbeard's Boats
Before the timeskip, Blackbeard and his crew were sailing the seas with a huge raft made of four giant wooden logs 🌲 that were rolled up and tied together. There are cannons on the sides of this ship and a large mast has been placed in the middle with three sails, including the main sail which features the Jolly Roger of the Blackbeard Pirates and two other smaller sails. The crew flag flies at the top of the mast. Note also that another sail is at the back of the raft with another flag placed on it. This large makeshift raft was destroyed by the Knock-Up Stream on the island of Jaya, but the crew eventually repaired it. However, they grabbed a Navy ship to go to Impel Down. Following the Battle of Marine Ford, the crew members wanted to leave with a raft, but Sanjuan Wolf had damaged it. They then attacked Jewelry Bonney and her crew and captured them in order to deliver them to the Navy and obtain a ship in exchange. ⛵ However, when Akainu arrived on a warship, Blackbeard and his pirates understood that there would be no exchange and they fled. Subsequently, we discover Blackbeard and his crew with a new ship that they had named the Saber of Xebec .
